![]() She can be cold as ice to him or raging and hot-tempered – she’s unpredictable and volatile. I love dissecting a good lyric so here’s my take on the meaning of this song and some of its layers. Okay, I NEVER post comments on Youtube but this song is so deep, rich and thought-provoking I had to. Just like she throws with the arm of her brother Sweet and right and merciful, I'm all but washed The way she shows me I'm hers and she is mine Thrown at me so powerfully, just like she throws The blood is rare and sweet as cherry wineĬalls of guilty thrown at me, all while she stains ![]() Lyrics © DistroKid, Sony/ATV Music Publishing LLC Their love is not perfect, but they still have moments of joy and connection. Her every breath and movement is intimately connected with me, like the ebb and flow of the tide.ĭespite the challenges, being with her is worth it and feels almost like a higher power. Her love washes over me and consumes me completely. Her love is a comfort and warmth to those who need it most. When she is passionate, she is full of energy and intensity.ĭespite her fiery nature, she loves deeply and completely. She is often physically or emotionally absent from the relationship, causing frustration and loneliness. It feels wrong or taboo to desire this relationship, but I can't help it. Her accusations are as strong and forceful as if they were thrown by a sibling.ĭespite the challenges, I still want to be with her. Just like she throws with the arm of her brother. She blames me with such force and conviction that it is almost overwhelming. She has been unfaithful and has slept with someone else. She causes harm or damage to herself and/or the relationship. She accuses and blames me for her own mistakes and wrongdoings. Their love is precious and intoxicating, like the taste of cherry wine. The blood is rare and sweet as cherry wine. It doesn't matter how she shows her affection, as long as she does. She emphasizes their connection and ownership of each other. The way she tells me I'm hers and she is mine There is no need for concern or worry, as everything is under control. The situation may not seem ideal, but it is honest and truthful. When she is passionate, she can appear angry and intense.īeing with her feels unpredictable and uncertain, like walking on a tightrope. Her passion is intense and adds fuel to the fire inside her. The song ends on a bittersweet note, with the singer acknowledging that he only has the good parts of the relationship some of the time.Īlthough she appears cold and distant, there is a passion that burns within her.ĭespite her outer appearance, she has a passionate spirit that drives her. The final verse describes the subject's "fiery" fight and "fury" balanced with her capacity for love that is "sweet and right and merciful." The singer expresses that the relationship is worth it and "divine" even if it is not always easy. The singer describes walking his days on a wire, perhaps indicating the precarious nature of their relationship.ĭespite the subject's anger and accusations of guilt, the singer is still drawn to her, saying "But I want it, it's a crime, that she's not around most of the time." The repeated line "the blood is rare and sweet as cherry wine" seems to refer to the intensity of their love, even though it may be volatile and destructive. The opening lines describe the subject of the song as "icy" with "words so icy" but also "burns" like "rum on a fire." The contrast between coldness and heat is a recurring theme in the song, with the subject exhibiting both anger and tenderness towards the singer. ![]() The Irish singer recorded "Cherry Wine" in an old abandoned hotel with a caved-in roof and walls covered in graffiti at "like 5 in the morning." He recreated the same easy vibe for the original video (tricking some of us into thinking it was a light and playful song, what with his rumpled hair and excellent beard).Hozier's "Cherry Wine" is a love song with dark undertones. ![]() It was originally released as part of his self-titled debut album in September 2014. Hozier wrote the song from the perspective of a man suffering in a physically abusive relationship. The chorus alone should have been a bit of a hint: The way she tells me I'm hers and she's mine / Open hand or closed fist would be fine. It took a new video starring Oscar nominated Saoirse Ronan released on Valentines Day to teach me what Hozier's "Cherry Wine" truly means. I just thought it was one of those beautiful, birds chirping and the sun is shining overhead kind of songs perfect for summer. but it turns out, I didn't really know all the words. I spent the entire summer of 2015 walking in the woods, listening to "Cherry Wine" by Hozier on repeat and feeling at one with nature.
